The customer wanted to replace the north bucket wheel, buckets and annular guard. The north bucket wheel is one of two-bucket wheels located at Drax Power Station on the coal handling plant.
The diameter of the bucket wheel is 6.9m, this would have to be manufactured in two halves to enable the transportation of the bucket wheel to site. A jig was designed and manufactured to make sure the two halves were made identical; the jig would also be used to weld the two halves together once on site.
The bucket wheel has nine 2000L buckets, which reclaim the coal back via the bucket wheel into the power station through a number of conveyors.
Installation of the bucket wheel project also included the replacement of the bucket wheel shaft and bearings.
